I presume if this isn't a virus then transferring the files over has triggered a problem with the hard drive that perhaps might always have occurred once it had more stored on it. The hard drive is a Samsung HM640JJ, 620GB. I'm not sure whether I should be ordering a new hard drive or not?

Is it possible for a virus etc to do this? I've backed up my files but don't know what to do next. Intel IAStorUI is also reporting that the hard drive is at risk.

it's not trying to get me to buy anything to fix the problem.

I've seen screenshots of malware-related warnings and mine doesn't quite look the same - there's also no suggested links to click on or anything, i.e. I'm now getting a hard drive failure warning for the internal hard drive in my laptop. The service isn't starting despite still being set to automatic. I changed this and set it to automatic and restore points stayed for a while but then disappeared again following the error described below. When I looked into it Volume shadow copy service wasn't started and was set to manual. System restore has also been playing up, with restore points disappearing for no reason. I've since changed from AVG to Microsoft Security Essentials (all other antivirus now uninstalled) but scans with this & malwarebytes don't show anything up. Scans showed up a trojan which was removed successfully - trojan downloader ASX/Wimad.bp but from the description of this I don't think it can be what's been causing the problem. My computer kept freezing up and running slowly, so I guessed I may have copied an infection over from the external hard drive. I couldn't find a fix for it so changed to the free version of AVG and uninstalled everything from McAfee except Security Scanner.

At the time, McAfee stopped working and kept shutting down. I've been experiencing problems with my Dell XPS 15 laptop, running Windows 7, which conveniently came out of warranty in January About a month ago the connections on a separate external hard drive I use at work broke so I copied everything from it over onto my laptop using a SATA cable.
